Are You Washing Your Hair the Right Way?
It might seem simple, but the way you wash your hair can have a real impact on how your scalp and strands look and feel. As a professional hair stylist and founder of OiTO Haircare, I’ve worked with all kinds of hair types and and one of the biggest game-changers for healthy-looking hair is getting your wash routine right.
Here are my simple steps to washing your hair the right way:
Step 1: Rinse First
Always start with a thorough rinse using warm water. This helps loosen dirt, excess oil and product build-up, making your shampoo more effective and easier to distribute evenly across your scalp.
Step 2: Shampoo the Scalp – Not the Hair
Focus your shampoo where it’s needed most: the scalp. Apply it directly to the roots and gently massage using your fingertips - not your nails. I always recommend shampooing twice: the first wash helps remove build-up, and the second gives a deeper, more refreshing clean.
Try using a gentle, scalp-supportive formula like OiTO GROW or OiTO STRONG Shampoo. They’re designed to purify without stripping and leave your scalp feeling clean and balanced.
Step 3: Rinse Thoroughly
Rinsing properly is just as important as washing. Leftover shampoo can cause your hair to look dull and your scalp to feel dry, especially if you wash frequently. Always take the time to rinse until the water runs clear.
Step 4: Condition From Mid-Lengths to Ends
Apply conditioner only to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair; this is where strands need the most hydration. Avoid the scalp to prevent any heaviness. Rinse with cool or lukewarm water to help seal the cuticle and boost shine.
I recommend OiTO GROW or OiTO STRONG Conditioner - both hydrate and soften without weighing the hair down.
Step 5: Be Gentle Post-Wash
Hair is more fragile when wet, so always blot gently with a towel and absolutely no rubbing! This helps reduce frizz and minimise breakage.
With just a few small tweaks, your wash routine can help support the overall condition of your hair, leaving it feeling softer, healthier and more manageable over time.
